Loughborough University Visit - Hurstpierpoint College

Following their mock exams, the Upper Sixth PE cohort set off on an inspiring visit to Loughborough University for a series of engaging workshops, thought-provoking talks, and hands-on physiology labs. The day provided a unique opportunity for pupils to experience the world of elite sport and higher education, seamlessly blending academic theory with real world application.

The visit kicked off with an insightful talk about performance sport and the life of a student athlete. Pupils gained a deeper understanding of the demands, commitments, and rewards of balancing academic studies with high level sporting ambitions.

A highlight of the day was the physiology testing at the UK Sports Institute labs. Matt H and James M bravely stepped up to undergo the exhaustive VO2Max testing on a gigantic treadmill, pushing their physical limits while their peers observed and analysed the data. The entire group also took part in a fascinating comparison of maximum and average power output at both sea level and within an Altitude Chamber, offering a practical application of key concepts from their A-Level curriculum.

Lunch provided a fantastic chance to connect with familiar faces, as pupils dined with OJ’s Dillon T, Chris P, Tallulah S, Olivia T-W, and Luke W. These current Loughborough students shared valuable insights into university life, discussing their courses, sporting commitments, and future aspirations — a glimpse into what may lie ahead for the visiting pupils.

The afternoon was filled with interactive Q&A sessions, where pupils engaged in workshop style discussions with University Hockey and Netball players. These sessions fostered open conversations about training routines, time management, and the support available to student athletes. The group explored the world class sports facilities on campus. They toured the ECB Cricket centre, HIPAC Athletics track, and the Swimming complex, with an exciting moment coming when they spotted Olympic Gold medallist Alex Yee, who trains at Loughborough.

The day concluded with a visit to Powerbase Gym, guided by British Powerlifting representatives. Pupils observed elite athletes in training and learned about the tailored support provided to those striving for sporting excellence.
