Students, staff and families gathered for St John’s Shakespeare Societies unforgettable rendition of William Shakespeare‘s King Lear, a timeless tragedy exploring themes of power, betrayal, madness, and redemption. The production, brought to life by a talented cast and innovative staging, delivered a powerful experience that captivated the audience from start to finish. Aging King Lear divides his kingdom among his daughters based on flattery. Betrayed by two, he descends into madness amid family treachery, loyalty, and redemption, ending in devastation and death.
Standout performances elevated the evening, beginning with Katie K’s portrayal of the scheming and two-faced Edmund. Kenny’s ability to embody the character’s cunning nature and capture moments of raw madness in her eyes was particularly notable from the start. Hamish K had a rather convincing and accurate portrayal of King Lear, and Jonty B’s commitment to the role of ‘Poor Tom’ impressed the audience with mannerisms that brought the character’s torment vividly to life.
