Junior and Senior Prep School Winter Concert - Hurstpierpoint College

Last week, the JPS and SPS Informal Ensemble Concert showcased the talent and potential of young musicians in the Music School Hall. The event highlighted not only the progress achieved in rehearsals but also the promising future of these ensembles as they advance to Senior School.

The concert opened with an energetic Star Wars medley, arranged by Miss Bray, Head of Prep School Music. This iconic John Williams score captivated the audience and set the tone for the afternoon. The orchestra then demonstrated its versatility with a contrasting Baroque piece, J.S. Bach’s Minuet.

Next, the Tutti Flutti flute ensemble and the Rockin’ Recorders teamed up for cheerful, upbeat tunes, a remarkable feat given that two of the four musicians had just started lessons this term, marking their first-ever performance. Following them, the Flute Juice ensemble performed Cool Flutin’, showcasing both precision and musicality.

Simply Strings impressed with an independent rendition of German Dance, skillfully balancing plucked and bowed techniques without a teacher leading. The Three Bees, a newly formed ensemble of percussion, piano, and trombone, brought Josef Zawinul’s Mercy, Mercy, Mercy to life, performed by two talented Year 7 students and Miss Bray.

The Jazz Band concluded the concert with It’s Free, a lively piece composed by department teacher Mark Travers. This joyful performance left the audience smiling and provided the perfect end to the event.

Congratulations to all the performers for their hard work and dedication, with a special mention to those making their debut performance. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the students in this wonderful celebration of music Kate Bray, Head of Prep School Music
