Intergalactic Production of Star Warts: The Umpire Strikes Back - Hurstpierpoint College

In the final week of the first half of term, Year 5 and 6 students thrilled audiences with a journey to a galaxy far, far away of Star Warts: The Umpire Strikes Back. This intergalactic parody of Star Wars, brilliantly written with book, music, and lyrics by Craig Hawes, brought laughter, catchy tunes, and a host of Sci-Fi references to the New Bury Theatre stage. With its unique blend of space and tennis themes, the production was filled with clever puns, zany characters, and familiar musical riffs from sci-fi classics like Flash Gordon, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek, and, of course, Star Wars itself—even the famous Tetris theme made a playful appearance!

The students, who had only the first half of the term to bring this ambitious show to life, delivered impressive performances with remarkable energy and enthusiasm. For many, particularly new students who joined this academic year, this was their first time performing on the New Bury Theatre stage. Year 5 students charmed the audience in roles as Stars, Diddly Squits, and Apprentices, lighting up the theatre with their joyful energy. Meanwhile, Year 6s embodied the beloved Sci-Fi parody roles with charisma, taking on daring heroes, notorious villains, and other fan-favourite characters from across the galaxy.

This incredible production wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. Special thanks go to Director Alex Ward and Musical Director Kate Bray for their skillful guidance, as well as to the theatre team for making every detail of this space-themed adventure come to life. Congratulations to all the Year 5 and 6 performers for their “out of this world” performances—and, as they say, may the sauce be with you!
