Geography in Action - Hurstpierpoint College

The College was privileged to host geologist, explorer, and university lecturer David Edwards for a day of enlightening and engaging presentations. The event was designed to enhance students’ understanding of the IGCSE and A Level Geography syllabuses, offering a dynamic blend of real-world experiences and cutting-edge research.

David Edwards captivated audiences with his extraordinary stories, beginning with his firsthand account of surviving the 1995 Montserrat volcanic eruption, a fascinating look at Iceland’s innovative use of plate tectonics, and an analysis of how geopolitical tensions are shaping global energy security. Students were highly engaged with his presentations and took full advantage of the opportunity to ask thought-provoking questions.

The afternoon culminated in a university-style lecture attended by the Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth Geography students. David took them on a scientific journey through Antarctica. His visit provided a memorable and enriching experience, inspiring curiosity and expanding students’ understanding of key geographical concepts.
