Exceptional EPQs - Hurstpierpoint College

After months of hard work in November, the Upper Sixth EPQ students presented their EPQ presentations in the Sports Hall. Students shared their work with Lower Sixth students, who will embark on the project next year, staff across the college and parents, before delivering their presentations to their EPQ assessors as part of their final submissions.

The quality of the designs was truly outstanding. A special mention for design must go to Nate A for his board on how far psychological factors impact athletic performance, which was perfectly planned to go across all six panels seamlessly. The classical symmetry of Mia C’s design, augmented with stitched in leaves really helped illustrate her short story on Medusa.

From the five original plays written by pupils to the causes of the opioid crisis to how the pandemic changed public attitudes, Hurst pupils demonstrated a breadth of learning that impressed everyone. The students gave such professional presentations that everyone listening was able to learn so much. Jasper P’s speech discussing the over-commercialisation of Mount Everest was excellent: his audience hadn’t realised that serious mountain climbers often avoid Everest, due to the numbers of amateurs attempting it.

From the voting by Lower Sixth, Upper Sixth, staff and parents, the overall winner was Helena F, who wrote and illustrated a children’s book that aimed to educate both children and parents about the positive aspects of introversion. Runner up was Libby B, whose model of a Swiss Chalet really impressed everyone who saw it. Other worthy winners were Phoebe P – who wrote and directed a musical about the rise of the suffragettes in the early 1900s and Laurence C – who looked at how religious spaces effectively display power.
