The ancient and revered tradition of Choral Evensong was beautifully brought to life within the walls of Winchester Cathedral. Performing in this majestic venue, the choir filled the expansive, resonant space with exquisite harmonies, delighting an audience in person as well as those watching online.
The pupils had invested significant effort in rehearsing for this performance, and their hard work was evident in the stirring and precise rendition of psalms. The evening’s canticles, composed by Charles Villiers Stanford, gave the tenor and bass sections a chance to shine, lending depth and intensity to the music. The anthem, written by contemporary composer Will Todd, was met with enthusiastic applause from both the congregation and the online audience, showcasing the choir’s versatility and expressiveness.
The performance was further elevated by Miss Bray on the organ, whose skillful accompaniment added layers of colour and emotion to the service. The recent refurbishment of the Winchester Cathedral organ seemed to unlock new and vibrant tones, enriching the overall experience.
Following the service, the choir celebrated with a dinner at a local restaurant, savouring their accomplishments and the memorable evening.
For those who missed the live experience, a recording of the evensong is available on YouTube, offering a chance to appreciate the music and ambiance of that remarkable evening. Watch the evensong here.
