Athletes Shine at English Schools XC Cup Team Event - Hurstpierpoint College

As summer fades into memory, Hurst’s athletes embraced the arrival of winter at the English Schools Cross Country (XC) Cup Team Event. Five dedicated teams from Hurst, representing different age groups, took on a challenging, hilly, and rain-soaked course at Brighton’s renowned Waterhall, with every athlete ready to embrace the poor weather conditions head-on.

Junior Girls
The day began with the Junior Girls, who set a strong pace. Hurst’s team of five performed superbly, led by Hattie L in 14th place, closely followed by Oriana D-R in 16th, Isis O in 20th, Emily P in 21st, and Etty W in 38th. Unfortunately, Annabel J could not start due to injury, but the team’s performance secured their advancement to the next round.

Junior Boys
The Junior Boys had a high standard to uphold, with standout performances across the board. Julius P took an impressive 3rd place, followed by Louis M in 12th, Noah C in 15th, Joshua H in 27th, and Jago F in 29th. The team’s efforts were commendable.

Inter Girls
Braving the wet and muddy course, the Inter Girls were next. Miya G-B led the pack, finishing 13th, with Ciara O at 28th, Emma G in 36th, Isla A at 37th, and Bibi C in 41st. After their race, the girls cheered enthusiastically for the Inter Boys.

Inter Boys
The Inter Boys maintained strong momentum, with Ben W securing 13th place, Jack S 16th, Zac F 20th, Felix M 35th, and Sam B 42nd. Although Tom M was unable to finish, his potential remains a bright spot for the future.

Senior Boys
The Senior Boys wrapped up the day on a muddy and challenging 5km course. Rising star Ben S achieved a notable 6th place, followed by Caleb E in 18th and Monty L-G in 23rd. Unfortunately, the team missed a fourth member to score, and there were no Senior Girls for this event.

The athletes’ determination and teamwork were inspiring, and the next English Schools fixture will be held on Tuesday, 14th January 2025, at Waterhall. This upcoming event offers athletes a chance to earn a spot in the Sussex Schools’ team for the February round, leading up to the English Schools Cross Country Final on March 15th, 2025, at Ardingly Showground.

I’m grateful to each athlete who showed up, supported one another, and gave their all. Despite the grim conditions, the commitment and positivity on display were truly inspiring. Mr Jeffery, Head of Athletics
