An Immersive Day in UK Politics - Hurstpierpoint College

The Lower Sixth students embarked on an inspiring trip to the Houses of Parliament on a crisp autumn day, where they gained a firsthand view of the inner workings of the UK’s political operations. The day included insightful tours of both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, offering students a rare opportunity to witness debates and experience the intense environment where crucial national decisions are made.

As the group toured the House of Commons, they observed a lively discussion on potential upgrades to the historic Parliamentary estate. They then moved to the House of Lords, where a debate on the recently proposed VAT on private school fees was underway. The trip included exciting encounters with prominent public figures including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Speaker of the House Lindsay Hoyle, and politician Nigel Farage.

The day’s highlight was a Q&A session with The Right Honourable Lord James Timpson OBE DL, the Minister for Prisons, and Alison Bennett, the MP for Mid-Sussex. Both shared insights into their respective roles, with Lord Timpson discussing current challenges in the prison system and reforms aimed at rehabilitation, while Alison spoke about representing her constituents in the Commons and the everyday responsibilities of an MP.

The visit concluded with students leaving Parliament more informed and inspired with their deepened understanding of the UK political system and further insight into the changes that may take place under the Labour Party after 14 years of Conservative ruling.
