Year 4 pupils enjoy exploring Hindu Festival of Lights
Year 4 pupils thoroughly enjoyed exploring Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights. Their learning concluded with a morning of special Diwali themed activities to consolidate their knowledge and understanding.
Firstly, children used the four operations to solve mathematical problems written in various shapes within Rangoli patterns, they then identified the lines of symmetry which are typically used to create this art work. The structure of Kenning poems provided an opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with the key vocabulary associated with Diwali including feasts, fireworks and the triumph of light over darkness.
Later pupils worked collaboratively in groups to retell the legend of Rama and Sita through drama. They took on the roles of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, the brother Lakshman, Hanuman the monkey king and Ravana the 10 headed demon. Pupils learnt that the overriding message of the story is good conquering evil and they understood that the story explains the origins of Diwali. A particular highlight of the morning was sculpting diva lamps out of clay, the children took care to form the spout and smooth any imperfections to create a useable candle holder.
