Teacher Training with Teach Hurst - our pioneering programme in Sussex

Teacher Training – Teach Hurst

Our pioneering four-year ‘Teach Hurst’ Teacher Training programme is fully-funded and includes sponsorship of PGCE and ECT training, a starting salary of £23,760 per annum, free on-site accommodation (if required) and free meals (term time only).

Our unique programme launched in 2015 which means we have over six years’ experience of running a teacher training scheme. Teach Hurst is the result of a considerable investment of time and money and the success of our training can be seen in the quality of our new teachers and their testimonials.

One key to our success as a school is excellent staff and Hurst College has always made a point of recruiting and training individuals who have the potential to become outstanding teachers. We value all our teachers and whether you join us straight from university, or after an initial career in another area of work, we believe every teacher’s experience and background are important. Most of all we are interested in candidates with enthusiasm and the drive to become brilliant teachers.

The main aspect that drew me to Teach Hurst over a regular PGCE route was the way in which I was able to work in the classroom straight away. This may seem quite daunting but I was supported by my mentor, Head of Department, Director of Professional Development and Performance and a large group of like-minded individuals who were also beginning their training. Mr Nicolas Chadwell, Head of Fifth Form and Business Studies Teacher

Our Teach Hurst programme

We are always on the lookout for well-qualified graduates/undergraduates, across a variety of subject areas, to become part of our programme.

Our programme consists of:

  • Year 1 Building classroom experience, knowledge and pedagogy through observation and class teaching on a reduced timetable
  • Year 2 A fully funded, in-school, PGCE course provided by Sussex University. Increased teaching load and further responsibility
  • Year 3 Early Career Teacher (ECT), greater autonomy, 10% reduction in teaching load
  • Year 4 Early Career Teacher (ECT), 5% reduction in teaching load

Throughout this time we offer close and supportive mentorship and a CPD programme.

Teach Hurst appealed to me as it is immersive from day one, but allows you to gain your PGCE qualification alongside a reduced teaching timetable. By the time I completed my PGCE in 2020, I had 2 years’ teaching experience and was made Coordinator of GCSE Religion, Ethics and Philosophy. Miss Georgina Cave, Co-ordinator of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy (REP) Years 9-11
