A Trip to the Design Museum - Hurstpierpoint College

At the start of the Lent Term, Remove GCSE Design and Technology students went on an inspiring trip to London’s Design Museum to research examples of contemporary design which will later influence their lighting project which they are just starting.

The highlight of the day was the hands-on lighting workshop, interacting with key pieces of lighting design, including Herman Miller’s Leaf Lamp and the design classic Anglepoise. In the workshop the students analysed the existing lamps, before designing their own based on user-centred briefs.

The group also explored the permanent ‘Designer, Maker, User’ exhibition–a comprehensive showcase featuring almost 1000 items of twentieth and twenty-first century design. Adding to the excitement was a visit to the temporary Barbie exhibition, which inspired many with its bold and playful aesthetic and encouraged the class to think about diversity and inclusion within society.

The pupils returned to Hurst brimming with ideas and enthusiasm ready to add their newfound inspiration and knowledge into their lighting projects.
