The Sciences

The Science Department operates on the basis of the three separate sciences, each having its own suite of well-equipped laboratories and prep room with technician support within the one building.  A tradition of scientific endeavour and achievement has been established at Hurst with many students proceeding to prestigious universities.

Entry requirements for Science subjects

Science coverage at GCSE provides an uneven preparation for the separate sciences in the Sixth Form.  Students will find therefore that the entry requirements for each subject differ.  To be successful, experience has shown that a sound grounding in Mathematics is important.  Indeed some further study of Mathematics in the Sixth Form is highly recommended if intending to continue to A2 Chemistry or Physics.  However, the main qualities sought are enthusiasm and commitment.

Guidance on A level requirements for a range of university science courses

Students are advised to think carefully about subject choices as the right combination of subjects enables options to be kept open.
