The national structure of AS (Lower Sixth) and A2 (Upper Sixth) exams enables a broadening of study after GCSE and most pupils choose four subjects to study at AS level. The majority of students go on to complete three A2 Levels in the Upper Sixth although some may wish to combine this with an additional AS level.
A wide range of subjects is taught at AS Level. Students are asked to pick four subjects from the following: Applied ICT, Art and Design, Art and Design (Photography), Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Classical Civilisation, Classical Greek, Computing, Dance, Design & Technology, Drama & Theatre Studies, Economics, English Literature, French, Further Mathematics, Geography, German, History, Latin, Mathematics, Music, Music Technology, Physical Education, Physics, Psychology, Religious Studies and Spanish.
Numbers opting for particular combinations will affect the precise pattern of the timetable so not all combinations, or indeed, choice of subjects may be available, although every endeavour is made to satisfy individual choices. After taking AS Levels in the first year, students continue with their chosen courses sitting A2 Levels in the summer of their second year. Those preparing for Oxford or Cambridge entry are offered additional support.
In addition, the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport is available. The Diploma takes the place of two AS subjects.
