Athletics at Hurst has become a more popular summer sport more recently at Hurst with a large number of juniors participating last year. Our intermediate age group (Remove & Fifth) had a fantastic season last year and many have gone on to represent Sussex and the college at club, regional and National competitions. Most of the major events are coached at Hurst including 100m-1500m running, Long distance running, Hurdles, Throws- Including Shot, Discus & Javelin (Hammer during activities only), Jumps- Including Long jump, Triple Jump and High Jump , and Relay. The coaching staff have a lot of experience including some ex-international and county representatives.

Achievements:
At our 3 major inter-school athletics competitions our Intermediate girls athletics team were unbeaten every time and our senior age group finished 2nd on two occasions and third on one. Our up and coming junior team had a slow start to their season with many athletes trying new events and doubling up finishing with a fifth place in their last competition.
The County championships on 8th & 9th May proved to be another successful weekend for the Girls athletics team. In the Junior and inter age groups India Coker finished 2nd in the 80m hurdles and Megan Edwards won Gold in the discus and Silver in the shot put. The inter girls relay just missed out on a podium finish, however they managed to set a fantastic new PB of 53.9s. Other valiant performances from Lauren Hope, Genie Pounds, Olivia Dickie, Fiona Burns, and Elysia Hannaford deserve a mention for their effort and Hurst spirit. In the Seniors competition, Gold went to India Parker-Smith in the 400m in which she also set a new personal best of 61.6s, Silver medals went to Jessica Challen in the Javelin, Ellen Franks in the Shot and 400 hurdles; another medal went to Ellen Franks when she placed 3rd in the 100m Hurdles. Silver also went to Cat Dunlop in the Triple Jump, Holly Webb in the Javelin and Joanna Moyers also won bronze in the Discus. This was a fantastic weekend of results, with some great performances; well done to all those who competed.
The Sussex County Schools Championships saw a record number of girls entered in the area teams. Holly Webb gave the outstanding performance of the weekend, winning gold in the inter girls Javelin with an English Schools qualifying distance of 35.33m. Holly went on to compete at the English schools championships in Birmingham finishing a respectable 13th in England with a new personal best of 35.81m. Other medals came from Ellen Franks won Gold in the 400m hurdles & silver in the high jump; Jess Challen won silver in the javelin; India Parker-Smith won silver in the 400m and Cat Dunlop won bronze in the triple jump. Other notable performances came from Megan Edwards - 4th in the Shot putt, Lauren Hope - 4th in 200m, and Fiona Burn s- 7th in 800m.
This year was the first year that we ran a specialist event workshop in long & triple jump with Jennie Neal (National development coach for jumps) at Broadbridge Heath athletics club on June 10th. A fantastic afternoon was had by all, with some expert coaching our athletes were jumping further in no time at all.
