Hurst’s U14s Hockey squad - already West Sussex Champions - take on Eastbourne College for Sussex Cup title

The U14A team has started the Lent term season off superbly and remain unbeaten, having played 10 matches winning nine and drawing one. Aside from school fixtures, the boys were victorious at the West Sussex finals at Seaford College in January, drawing with Seaford but achieving excellent victories over Chichester High School (2-0), St Andrew’s Worthing (3-0) and Lancing College (2-0).

This booked them a place at the Regional U14 Tournament to be played at Woking Hockey Club on 8th March but in the meantime there was the prospect of the Sussex Cup final played today, (Monday 14th February) at the Southdown Hockey Club in Lewes against Eastbourne College.

Mr Wilson reports:

Sussex Cup Final U14 Hockey result Hurst 1 Eastbourne 0

This was a game where Hurst started the game very soundly and dominated possession and really placed Eastbourne under pressure with shots on goal and short corners. Eastbourne held out and for most of the first half it was Hurst who were camping in the Eastbourne 23, but just couldnt find the back of the net.

The second half saw Eastbourne play with a bit more urgency and this stepped Hurst's game up and Hurst made the break through with 12 minutes to go when Ben Cooke drove into the circle and Alex Cooke deflected the ball home to take the lead. The last 10 minutes Hurst played some well constructed hockey to keep the ball and seal a great win, becoming Sussex Champions.

Hurst’s U16s Hockey squad - West Sussex Champions 2011

As for Hurst’s U16 squad, they enjoyed similar success in their qualifying tournament for the West Sussex title.. Playing on their home ground, they beat Seaford College 5-1 in a great display of free flowing hockey but were more tightly managed by a very competitive squad from Bishop Luffa College and the game ended in a 1-1and draw. This was enough to enable the U16’s to go through to contest the all-County final against Lewes Old Grammar on 1st March, having already qualified for the Regionals in Surrey later in March.

“They are both superb squads who only began their hockey training in early January and have reached an impressive standard of play in just a couple of weeks” said Hurst’s Head of Hockey Chris Wilson. “I am greatly looking forward to seeing them perform at the Regionals in March when they will have a great deal more experience under their belts; what I am certain of now is that they will prove to be formidable opponents and play some exceptionally high quality hockey."
