Hurst Schools' Challenge team move on to the second round after victory over Brighton

Schools' Challenge, the general knowledge competition for schools in the United Kingdom has been running since 1979. The competition is very similar in style and structure to television’s University Challenge.

This year’s first round of the Senior School competition are currently taking place throughout the country and Hurst hosted the first of their Senior School matches having been drawn against a local school, Brighton College.

The Hurst team, who were selected on the basis of individual performances in this year’s Hurst ‘Top House’ competition, are all from West Sussex.
They are:
Georgina (‘Georgie’) Meredith (Shield House, Remove, from Chelwood Gate)
Chris Savory (St John’s House, Upper Sixth, from Burgess Hill)
Mollie Weller (Martlet House, Remove, from Billingshurst)
and Michael Zhang (St John’s House, Upper Sixth, from Hassocks)

“I expected them to perform strongly” said Hurst’s Top House and Schools’ Challenge organiser, Trevor Baxter. “and they were outstandingly good”.

“Hurst sprinted to 100-0 up within the first two minutes of the match and thereafter the team never faltered” continued Mr Baxter. “I was very impressed by their assurance, their demeanour and their quiet inner confidence.”

“The questions ranged widely covering all tastes and interests. Competitors needed to know, for example, the name of red engine number 5 in the Thomas the Tank Engine series of children’s books” (answer – James) “and the name of the ‘play within a play’ in Midsummer Night’s Dream” (answer - Pyramus and Thisbe). “It was in the best tradition of these competitions – a really superb test of general knowledge.”

The team’s next test will be against the prestigious Kingston Grammar School (KGS) also at home. Meanwhile, some of the team can limber up in the Senior Final of Top House which takes place at 5.30 on Thursday 19th November in the Physics Labs. Those wishing to come and cheer on their teams (the boys of Red Cross face the girls of Shield) will be made very welcome.
