Hurst gets the chemistry right in the 2010 Olympiad

Hurst chemists achieved significant success in this year's prestigious RSC Chemistry Olympiad.

The questions featured in this year's competition for the nations top Sixth Form chemists were, of course, complex and challenging. They ranged from the synthesis of a substitute for ambergris, (an ingredient of fine fragrances, obtained from sperm whales) and the problem of de-icing roads in the Russian winter to the thickness of the gold covering the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

Hurst's chemists were up to the challenge, however. Tom Prosser and Michael Zhang were both awarded a commendable bronze certificate whilst Chris Savory achieved a magnificent gold, placing him in the top 6% nationally.

Both Tom and Chris have conditional offers to read Chemistry at university.
