Assessment and Monitoring

Hurst's Grades and Reporting system provides us with a framework to ensure that every child is challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be. Through the 'portal' on the Grades and Reporting system, staff and parents can track and monitor their child's progress.

We use a number of standardised tests to monitor the pupils’ progress as they pass through the school. The NFER Progress in Maths, Reading and diagnostic spelling tests in English provide information on children’s progress and Cognitive Analytical Tests are also used for information about their potential. All children have regular assessments in class.

  • Years 3, 4 and 5 have regular assessments based on National Curriculum levels and moderated carefully by their teachers..
  • Years 6 have internally set examinations in academic subjects at the end of the year.
  • Year 7 and 8 pupils follow our new Hurst Entrance Examination Curriculum.
  • Year 7 have examinations at the end of the Summer term. They have key pieces of work assessed in each subject throughout the academic year.
  • Year 8 sit mock examinations in the Lent Term and a final examination at the end of the Summer term. Assessment results will be used to assess suitability for the Senior School.
  • Pupils are selected for Academic Scholarship in Year 8 after the Lent Term exams. These pupils take a range of cognitive tests, sit a general paper and are asked to prepare a research study for a presentation to a panel of Senior School staff. The Hurst Scholarship examinations are taken at the same time as the Hurst Exam at the end of the Summer term.
