Admissions

Registration may be made at any time but it is advisable to register early.

For the Senior School, it is desirable to register a child two years before the proposed date of entry.

For the Prep School and the Pre-Prep, it is desirable to register a child at least two terms before entry. At present, the Pre-Prep has very few places available for the current or forthcoming academic years. All Hurst schools require a Registration Fee of £100, but no further payment is required when a child moves up from one school to the next.

Prep School Admissions

Children normally join Hurst Prep when they are 7 or 11 but they can enter at any age. Entry is based upon assessment via a Sampler Day spent at school and confidential report from current school.

Entry from Hurst Pre-Prep at 7, into Year 3:
Children are assessed at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and there is an assessment day in January for all pupils wishing to enter Year 3. Most children will proceed to Hurst Prep.

Entry from other Pre-Preps or Primary Schools into Years 3, 4, 5 & 6:
Children usually join Hurst Prep in the Michaelmas Term, although entry is possible at the start of any term. Assessment in Year 3 is via an assessment day in January and the receipt of a satisfactory confidential report from the child’s current school. For Years 4-6 entry is via a sampler day with assessments and the receipt of a satisfactory confidential report from the child’s current school.

Entry from other Prep Schools and Primary Schools at the end of Key Stage 2 into Year 7:
Children usually join us at the start of the Michaelmas Term but entry is possible at the start of any term. There is an Assessment day in January for all pupils wishing to enter Year 7 and a confidential report will be required from the pupil’s current school.

In certain circumstances, it may be possible for children to join Year 8. This will be subject to a sampler day, assessment and the receipt of a confidential report from the pupil’s current school.

Our Head would be delighted to welcome you and your family to see the school and answer any questions at a mutually convenient time. To arrange an appointment or for further information about entry to the Prep School (for children aged 7–13 years), please contact:

Senior School Admissions

Pupils must be registered on the School’s list for a particular term.

Pupils normally enter the Senior School between the ages of 13 and 14. They must pass the Common Entrance, the College’s own internal examinations or Scholarship examinations.

Entrants from maintained schools and from overseas undergo separate tests and interviews.

Sixth Form Admissions

A reasonable prospect of achieving Sixth Form success, our experience suggests, requires that pupils achieve an A or A* grade at GCSE in the subjects they intend to study. Where a pupil wishes to start a new subject which they have not studied before, they need to have achieved an A/A* in a GCSE subject closely related to it (ie for A Level Economics, ideally a pupil should have an A/A* in Maths GCSE).  All Sixth Form students should have a minimum of a C grade at GCSE in Mathematics and English. However, we recognise the need to be flexible and to operate on an individual pupil basis, working closely with each student on his or her choices, to establish what will be the best course of action for them.

New entrants are invited to attend a Sixth Form General Entry Day in November, when they meet staff and fellow students and are asked to complete a Verbal Reasoning Paper. We do, however, welcome applications at any time during the academic year preceding entry.

Before a boy or girl comes to a Sixth Form General Entry Day, parents are asked to ensure that the Head of their son’s or daughter’s present school is informed. We also ask the school for a report on the candidate and their GCSE grade predictions.

For further information about entry to the Sixth Form (for students aged 16-18 years) please contact:
