Hannah Linklater

    Head of Higher Education

Hannah joined Hurst in May 2017, having gained several years’ experience in both primary and senior schools. She studied History and Politics at Wadham College, Oxford, and also holds a postgraduate certificate in Play Therapy. In her role as Head of Higher Education, she works alongside the Head of Careers to ensure that each student is able to access the best possible path for them. She organises a number of talks and trips for students relating to higher education, and is committed to providing impartial, informed and individualised support.

We have an experienced and enthusiastic team looking after university applications. The Head of Higher Education, Hannah Linklater, oversees all applications, and we have specialists within the team who manage particular types of applications. These include the Director of Academic Development (Liam Agate) who manages Oxbridge applications; the Co-ordinator for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Applications (Sue Crickmore); and the Co-ordinator for University Applications Abroad (Nick Fanthorpe). Our Head of Careers (Jan Leeper) and Careers Adviser (Tania Fielden) also support our Sixth Formers in making their university choices, and can offer expert advice to those choosing to take other paths after the Sixth Form (including degree apprenticeships and going straight into work).

Support for the process of applying to university starts early in the Sixth Form, with information evenings, for parents and students in the Lower Sixth, on choosing universities and Oxbridge. Students are offered bespoke preparation for application to highly selective universities. Highly selective university candidates meet weekly to experience seminars or lectures with Heads of Department that look at different subjects in new lights, beyond the curriculum. To support their applications, students are encouraged to enter essay competitions - those run by universities and societies for Year 12 students, as well as Hurst’s own annual essay competition which is held for the Senior School in all subjects. Specific provision for applicants to medicine, veterinary science and dentistry courses is provided in weekly sessions.

All Lower Sixth students have individual consultations with the Head of Higher Education in the Lent term, and in the Summer term we organise trips to universities, a university fair and a UCAS information day. Our Lower Sixth students have access to Unifrog online, which helps students to identify the right university courses for them.

In the Upper Sixth, students are helped with their applications by their tutor and by the Head of Higher Education. Students applying for Oxbridge and Medicine are thoroughly prepared through mock interviews and mock entrance examinations, as well as sessions with subject experts and lectures and talks from outside experts.

In the 2016-17 UCAS cycle, 88% of applicants achieved a place at their first choice of university, and over 50% of Upper Sixth leavers went on to Russell Group universities.
