Rugby

Training

Fifteen-a-side rugby is the main rugby played in the Michaelmas term with seven-a-side rugby played in the Lent term. As with our other sports, there are many teams for each age group so that pupils of all ability levels can participate.

We also offer rugby to girls as a games activity during the Michaelmas term.

Rugby lessons are split so that every boy has access to, and is coached by, our best coaches.

Elite players have additional strength and conditioning and specialised skill sessions in addition to the usual training which takes place during games sessions. Harlequin Academy coaches regularly attend focussed training sessions with the 1st XV team.

Pre-season training takes place in the summer holidays to prepare for the full fixture programme and there is a pre-season trip for U15 to U18 every August.

Fixtures and tournaments

Matches are played every Saturday with cup matches and extra fixtures during the week.

Our 1st XV team participate in the Tier One Champions Trophy for U18s, whilst our U16A, U15A and U14A teams take part in the Sussex Cup competitions.

The 1st XV play at the prestigious St Joseph’s Rugby Festival during the October half-term. This is a renowned invitational tournament which attracts some of the best rugby schools in the country and internationally. The U15s play in the Festival’s sister tournament, the Langley Rugby Festival.

Rugby Sevens

In the Lent term we run an extensive Senior Sevens programme with training three times a week. The season comprises eight or more tournaments, including Surrey Sevens and Rosslyn Park, and culminates in the National Schools Sevens and the Sedbergh 10s tournaments.

The U14s, U15s and U16s have Sevens training twice a week and compete in four or five tournaments each year, including Rosslyn Park.

Facilities

Facilities include seven grass pitches as well as access to the Performance Gym, AstroTurfs, Performance Analysis software and floodlit facilities during the winter.

Hurst are, year by year, entering the school's rugby elite. We have had some superb performances in the last few years and are getting more and more consistent. Mr Pierrepont, Master-in-charge of Rugby
