Prep School Admissions

Applications for entry to Year 7 in 2020 are now open.  Contact the Admissions Office for more information or to book a place on the 11+ Open Morning on Tuesday 8 October.

Following a visit, if you would like your child to be considered for a place at Hurst Prep School please complete the registration form as soon as possible and return this to Admissions together with payment of the £100 registration fee (this can also be paid online from the Fees and online payments page). This registration will initially reserve a place for your child in the year group, but it is not a guarantee of a place.

We advise registering your child at least 18 months prior to when you would like them to join.

    Taster days and assessments

We would be delighted to welcome your child to our Prep School for a taster session where they join pupils in their current year group and participate in lessons and activities and join them for lunch if they wish.  This is a helpful opportunity for your child to feel less anxious about a potential school move.

Assessment days are held for each of the key entry points.  These assessments are important for us to ascertain not only whether your child will be able to access the curriculum, but whether they will be happy in the Hurst environment.

Applications for entry into Years 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are accepted subject to space and pupils will be required to sit entry tests.  Please contact Admissions to find out more about space in these year groups.

    Year 7 entry (11+)

Assessment days are held in the January of the year of entry. Pupils sit the Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning aspects of the ISEB on-line Pre-tests, which are standardised tests to measure ability and attainment. These tests are designed by ISEB so that pupils cannot prepare for them, in order to give fair results. For information on these tests please visit the ISEB website here.

In addition, pupils will be asked to complete a writing task and will participate in interactive tasks which will usually include Design and Technology, Science and games. All pupils will have an interview with a senior member of staff and join current pupils for lunch.

All pupils sitting the Year 7 assessments will be automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship based on the results of the tests.

    Year 3 entry (7+)

Assessment days are held in February of the year of entry. Your child will be invited to spend the day in the Prep School and will sit reasoning, maths and english tests and participate in fun group activities and games.  The day is relaxed and informal with lunch and refreshment breaks.

    Reception entry

Assessment days are held in January of the year of entry.  Your child will be invited to spend an hour in the current Reception classroom – a friendly, informal environment – where they will participate in group activities and games.  The sessions are relaxed and parents are invited to stay for refreshments in a room close by.

Based on the results of the assessments in conjunction with school references and interviews, offers of a place will be made to pupils and a deposit requested.  All offers are conditional upon receipt of a satisfactory reference from your child’s current school.

Pupils who currently receive Learning Support will be invited to meet with our Learning Support department so that, if required, support can be put in place for when your child joins Hurst.
